ChatGPT Ads: Complete Guide for Marketers in 2026, Comergent AI Blog

ChatGPT is no longer only a place where brands try to appear organically in AI-generated recommendations. In 2026, it also became an advertising channel where businesses can pay to reach people while they're researching, comparing products, and making decisions.

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States on February 9, 2026. The initial pilot was limited to logged-in adults using Free and Go, but the program has expanded considerably since then. OpenAI has introduced a self-serve Ads Manager, CPC buying, conversion measurement, custom audiences, automated bidding, and product-feed campaigns, while advertiser self-service is now available in dozens of countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, India, Canada, Australia, Japan, Brazil, and much of Europe.

For ecommerce brands, the opportunity is particularly interesting. A traditional search ad might reach someone searching "best running shoes," while a ChatGPT conversation can contain far more context: the shopper may explain that they're training for their first marathon, have wide feet, prefer lightweight shoes, and want to spend less than $150.

That creates a different advertising environment. But it doesn't mean ChatGPT Ads should automatically replace Google Shopping, Meta, or your organic AI visibility strategy.

This guide explains what ChatGPT Ads actually are in 2026, how they work, what they cost, how ecommerce brands can use them, and what marketers should understand before shifting a meaningful budget into the channel.

What Are ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads are paid placements that can appear below ChatGPT's responses. They're clearly identified as sponsored and visually separated from the organic answer, which matters because OpenAI says advertising does not influence what ChatGPT says or which brands it organically recommends.

The current standard ad can contain an advertiser name and favicon, headline, description, landing page, and image. OpenAI's system then determines whether an eligible ad is relevant to the user's situation based on factors including the current conversation, the ad itself, its landing page, advertiser-supplied context hints, targeting settings, and, where ad personalization is enabled, selected signals from the user's broader ChatGPT experience.

This makes ChatGPT advertising different from simply buying a keyword. An advertiser might tell the system that a particular product is relevant to conversations about "gifts for new runners," "running shoes for beginners," or "comfortable shoes for marathon training." OpenAI calls these context hints. They help the system understand relevant conversational situations, but they aren't exact-match keywords and don't guarantee the ad will appear whenever those words occur.

ChatGPT Ads vs Organic ChatGPT Recommendations

Before discussing campaigns, there's one distinction every ecommerce marketer should understand: paying for a ChatGPT ad does not buy an organic ChatGPT recommendation.

OpenAI states that ads operate separately from ChatGPT's answers. Advertisers cannot pay to change, rank, or influence the response, and seeing an ad doesn't mean OpenAI endorses that advertiser. Someone might ask "what are the best running shoes for a beginner training for a half marathon?" ChatGPT may organically discuss several products or brands in its response, and a sponsored running-shoe ad could then appear below that response if the advertising system considers it relevant. Those are two separate visibility surfaces.

GEO/AEO and brand/product information can help organic discoverabilityCampaign setup, relevance, bids, creative and targeting affect paid delivery

For ecommerce brands, this means the arrival of ads doesn't eliminate the importance of ranking organically on ChatGPT. Paid and organic AI visibility should be measured separately.

How Do ChatGPT Ads Work?

A useful way to understand ChatGPT advertising is to follow what happens between a user's conversation and the sponsored placement.

Suppose a shopper tells ChatGPT "I need a carry-on suitcase under $200 that's lightweight and good for international travel." ChatGPT generates its normal answer independently. The advertising system can separately evaluate whether there's a relevant advertiser for that conversational context.

OpenAI says its delivery system considers the conversation's context and intent, along with the advertiser's landing page, headline, copy, targeting selections and context hints. When personalization is enabled, selected signals from the user's broader ChatGPT experience can also contribute.

Eligible ads then compete through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. This is another important difference from assuming the advertiser with the highest bid automatically receives the placement. OpenAI says its auction aims to balance advertiser value with user value, meaning relevance remains part of delivery.

The result is an advertising model that sits somewhere between search advertising and contextual discovery. Search advertising begins primarily with a query. ChatGPT Ads can operate within a much richer conversation.

Who Sees Ads in ChatGPT?

OpenAI originally launched the advertising test for logged-in adults on Free and Go. The program has since expanded geographically, but plan eligibility remains important.

Ads may appear for eligible users on Free and Go plans. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts do not have ads, and accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 are excluded. There's also now an ad-free option for eligible Free users, who can choose an ads-free experience in exchange for reduced usage limits and reduced access to certain features. Plus and Pro remain ad-free without that Free-tier tradeoff.

For advertisers, this matters when estimating addressable reach. ChatGPT's total user base is not the same thing as ChatGPT Ads' reachable audience because some subscription tiers and users are not eligible to receive ads.

Where Are ChatGPT Ads Available?

The geographic picture has changed quickly during 2026. The advertising test began in the United States in February, and OpenAI subsequently announced expansion to additional markets, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea, followed by further international expansion.

Advertiser access is now broader still. As of September 2026, OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page lists self-service access in numerous markets, including India, the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan, South Korea, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and many European countries. Because the rollout is moving quickly, marketers should check OpenAI's current availability page rather than relying on older articles describing ChatGPT Ads as U.S.-only.

What Do ChatGPT Ads Look Like?

The standard ad unit currently appears below a ChatGPT response rather than being inserted into the organic answer. According to OpenAI's advertiser documentation, the unit can include the advertiser's name, favicon, headline, description, landing page and creative image.

This separation is intentional. One early advertiser observed that the strong visual separation between the answer and the sponsored placement may also influence click behavior: the advertiser was spending several thousand dollars per day during the early pilot but generating very few orders, and one explanation offered was that users could clearly distinguish the ad from the organic response. That experience came from an earlier version of the product, so it shouldn't be treated as a current performance benchmark, OpenAI has since added significantly more optimization and measurement capabilities. But it highlights an important principle: marketers shouldn't assume ChatGPT users will interact with sponsored content in exactly the same way they interact with Google search ads.

How Much Do ChatGPT Ads Cost?

Some early articles about ChatGPT Ads quote approximately $60 CPM and a minimum commitment around $200,000. Those numbers describe the early pilot rather than the current self-service platform.

The current system is considerably more flexible. OpenAI supports three campaign objectives:

ObjectivePrimary GoalBuying Model
ViewsMaximize visibilityCPM
ClicksDrive website/product trafficCPC
ConversionsOptimize toward a supported conversion eventConversion optimization

For CPC campaigns, OpenAI currently recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click, though this is a recommended starting bid rather than a guaranteed CPC. Actual costs can vary according to competition, relevance, campaign settings and auction conditions.

The large minimum spend associated with the original pilot is also no longer representative of self-service access. One early advertiser's experience documents that transition clearly: initial discussions involved roughly $200,000 to $250,000, later moved closer to $150,000, and eventually changed to no minimum requirement. That makes ChatGPT Ads much more accessible to ecommerce companies that want to test the platform without committing enterprise-scale pilot budgets.

How to Create a ChatGPT Ads Campaign

Advertisers in supported countries can use OpenAI's self-service Ads Manager Beta. OpenAI currently organizes the platform around three levels: the campaign defines the objective, budget, dates and broad targeting; ad groups organize related ads around themes or intent areas; and individual ads contain the creative shown to users.

A typical ecommerce campaign could look like this:

  • Campaign: Running Shoes, Conversions
  • Ad Group: Beginner Marathon Runners
  • Context: conversations about first marathons, long-distance training and beginner running shoes
  • Creative: lightweight running shoe with price, value proposition and product image
  • Landing Page: relevant product or collection page

The marketer isn't simply bidding on "running shoes." The campaign is trying to become relevant within the situations where the product can genuinely help the user. Advertisers can set budgets, campaign dates, countries, objectives and optional custom audiences, and ad groups can then use context hints to help OpenAI understand the kinds of conversations where the ads may be relevant.

How Targeting Works in ChatGPT Ads

The phrase "conversational targeting" can make ChatGPT Ads sound as if advertisers are reading people's chats. That's not how OpenAI describes the system.

OpenAI says advertisers do not receive users' conversations, chat histories, memories or personal details. Advertisers receive aggregated performance information such as views and clicks rather than access to individual conversations. The ad-delivery system itself can use conversation context to determine relevance, and with personalization enabled, additional signals from the user's broader ChatGPT experience may also contribute to ad selection. Users can control personalization and delete their ad data.

For advertisers, targeting tools now extend beyond conversational context. OpenAI has introduced custom audiences, allowing advertisers to upload customer or prospect lists using supported identifiers such as email addresses and phone numbers. Audiences can be used for inclusion, exclusion, and certain bid adjustments. OpenAI applies minimum scale requirements to some of these uses: inclusion audiences and bid adjustments currently require at least 25,000 matched users, while OpenAI recommends audiences of at least 100,000 users for inclusion or bid-adjustment use cases.

That makes the platform increasingly similar to a mature performance channel, while conversational relevance remains one of its distinctive characteristics.

ChatGPT Product Feed Ads for Ecommerce

One of the most important 2026 developments for retailers is support for product-feed campaigns. Retail advertisers can upload a catalog feed and create ads from their product data at scale. OpenAI says feed-based campaigns are designed for brands with broad or frequently changing catalogs and can keep details such as product availability and metadata current.

Product ads can incorporate information including product images, titles, star ratings, prices, sale prices and brand details. Catalogs can currently be imported through CSV/TXT files, hosted URLs, or SFTP connections.

OpenAI also states that advertisers using product feeds have been among the strongest performers in its advertising program to date. That's a platform-reported observation rather than a universal ROAS benchmark, but it makes product feeds particularly relevant for Shopify and other ecommerce merchants with large catalogs.

There's an important distinction here as well: OpenAI explicitly says that uploading products through Ads Manager makes them eligible for ads during the beta, not automatically eligible to appear in organic ChatGPT conversations. For organic AI discovery, product-data quality still matters independently. Our Shopify product data quality guide explains how to improve the underlying information AI systems may need to understand products, while the product feed optimization guide covers feed quality in more detail.

How ChatGPT Ads Are Measured

Measurement was one of the biggest weaknesses of the original advertising pilot. One early advertiser initially had little more than impressions, clicks and spend available inside the platform and relied heavily on UTMs, Google Analytics and internal order data to understand downstream results.

That situation has changed substantially. Ads Manager Beta now reports metrics including impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. Advertisers can also add UTM parameters to landing-page URLs so ChatGPT Ads traffic can be analyzed alongside other acquisition channels.

OpenAI has also introduced its Pixel and Conversions API to capture post-click outcomes such as purchases, leads and sign-ups. OpenAI says advertisers receive aggregated campaign insights without receiving users' conversations or personal chat information.

For an ecommerce team, the measurement framework should extend beyond CTR. Track the full journey: impression, click, product view, add to cart, checkout, purchase, revenue. Then compare ChatGPT Ads against other acquisition channels using metrics such as CPC, conversion rate, customer acquisition cost, revenue, ROAS, new-customer rate and average order value.

ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads

ChatGPT Ads shouldn't simply be described as the "next Google Ads." The user behavior is different.

Google Search usually begins with a concise query. ChatGPT can contain several turns of context before the advertiser becomes relevant. A user might begin with "help me plan my first camping trip," later discuss the expected weather, mention a $500 equipment budget, and eventually ask what sleeping bag to buy.

That richer context may create valuable advertising moments, but Google currently has a much more mature advertising ecosystem, far more historical performance data, broader campaign tooling, and established optimization workflows. The practical approach in 2026 is therefore to treat ChatGPT Ads as an incremental acquisition channel, not an automatic replacement for Google Search, Shopping, Meta or other proven channels.

What Early ChatGPT Ads Performance Tells Us

One useful reference point comes from an actual early advertiser rather than a description of the platform. During that brand's early test, several thousand dollars in daily ChatGPT Ads spend produced very few orders, despite the company spending roughly $1 million per day on Google Ads and generating thousands of orders there.

That result shouldn't be generalized to today's platform. The campaign came from an early version that lacked many features marketers now have, and OpenAI has since added CPC and conversion-optimized campaigns, automated bidding, custom audiences, product feeds, better reporting and conversion tracking.

The more useful lesson is that high conversational intent does not automatically equal high advertising ROAS. Marketers still need the right product, creative, landing page, offer, attribution and bidding strategy.

ChatGPT Ads and GEO Should Work Together

The arrival of paid ads doesn't make Generative Engine Optimization irrelevant. It makes the distinction between paid and organic AI visibility more important.

A brand can potentially advertise beneath a conversation while still being absent from the organic answer above it. Another brand could appear organically without spending anything on the ad auction. For ecommerce businesses, the strongest strategy is therefore not necessarily choosing between SEO, GEO, or ChatGPT Ads, it's understanding how each channel contributes to discovery.

Traditional SEO helps customers find you through search engines. GEO/AEO improves how clearly your brand, products and expertise can be understood and surfaced across AI experiences. ChatGPT Ads provide paid access to eligible conversational advertising inventory. If your goal is improving the organic side, start with how ChatGPT decides which Shopify stores to recommend and how to track AI search visibility.

Should Ecommerce Brands Test ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT Ads are worth evaluating when your customers use conversational research during the buying journey, particularly when purchases involve comparison, explanation, recommendations or multiple constraints. A furniture brand could reach someone asking for a sofa suitable for a small apartment with pets. A skincare retailer could potentially reach eligible non-sensitive shopping contexts where a user is comparing cosmetic products. A luggage brand could reach someone planning a trip and researching carry-on options.

However, the platform is still in beta. OpenAI itself says Ads Manager capabilities, delivery systems, inventory, formats and optimization will continue evolving. For that reason, brands should test incrementally. Define a clear conversion event, use proper UTMs and conversion tracking, establish a benchmark from existing paid channels, and judge ChatGPT Ads on actual incremental business outcomes rather than novelty.

How to Prepare Your Ecommerce Brand for ChatGPT Ads

Start with product information before worrying about clever advertising copy. Product titles, prices, availability, images, variants and landing pages need to be accurate because relevance cannot compensate for poor catalog data or a weak post-click experience.

For retailers with larger catalogs, product-feed campaigns are particularly worth testing. Keep feeds updated automatically where possible, organize products into meaningful groups, and make sure landing pages accurately reflect the product information shown in the ad.

Then think conversationally rather than only in keywords. Ask what problem the shopper is trying to solve, what constraints they might mention, what comparison they're making, and what would make your product genuinely relevant at that moment.

This same work can also support organic AI visibility. Improving product descriptions that AI platforms can understand and cite, strengthening structured product data, and improving catalog quality can create a stronger foundation across both paid and organic AI discovery.

Final Thoughts

ChatGPT Ads have developed much faster than many early 2026 guides suggest. What began as a limited pilot with CPM buying and large advertiser commitments has developed into a broader beta platform with self-service access, CPC and conversion objectives, custom audiences, automated bidding, product feeds, Pixel and Conversions API measurement, and international advertiser availability.

The opportunity for ecommerce brands isn't simply that ChatGPT has a large audience. The more interesting difference is where advertising can appear in the customer's decision process. People use ChatGPT to describe problems, compare options, establish constraints and work toward decisions, giving the advertising system richer context than a traditional keyword alone.

But that doesn't make ChatGPT Ads a guaranteed performance channel. Early advertiser experience demonstrates why marketers should be careful about assuming conversational intent automatically translates into purchases.

The strongest 2026 strategy is to test rather than speculate. Build a properly measured campaign, use accurate product data, experiment with relevant conversational contexts, measure downstream revenue, and compare the results against your established acquisition channels.

At the same time, don't treat paid ChatGPT visibility as a substitute for organic AI visibility. A shopper can see an organic recommendation and a sponsored placement within the same experience, but those surfaces are generated independently.

For Shopify brands, that makes the bigger opportunity clear: understand where your products appear organically, understand where competitors are being recommended, improve the product information AI systems can use, and then test paid ChatGPT Ads where the economics make sense. That's a more durable strategy than treating ChatGPT Ads as either the next Google Ads or a short-lived advertising experiment.
