LLMs.txt for Shopify: The Setup That Gets You Indexed by AI
A llms.txt file is the simplest technical change you can make to get ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot to understand your store better. A Shopify store that added it correctly saw a 340% increase in AI referral traffic within 60 days.
A llms.txt file is the simplest technical change you can make to get ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot to understand your store better. A Shopify store that added it correctly saw a 340% increase in AI referral traffic within 60 days. Here's exactly how to set it up.
What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a plain-text file you place at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, similar to robots.txt, but instead of controlling crawler behavior, it provides AI systems with a structured summary of your website. When an AI crawler visits your site, it reads llms.txt to get a clean, machine-readable overview of what you sell, who you are, and what your key pages are.
Without llms.txt, an AI crawler has to infer your store's content from your HTML, JavaScript, and page structure, which is error-prone, especially for Shopify stores with dynamically-generated content. With llms.txt, you give the AI exactly what it needs to understand and accurately represent your store.
What to include in your Shopify llms.txt
A well-structured Shopify llms.txt should include:
- Brand overview: 2-3 sentences describing your brand, what you sell, who you serve, and your key differentiators. Plain language, no marketing fluff.
- Product categories: A list of your main product categories with brief descriptions and direct URLs.
- Best-seller links: Direct URLs to your top 5-10 products, so AI crawlers can access and index the most important product pages.
- Key claims: Your brand's core factual claims, certifications, materials, origins, specializations, in plain text that AI can retrieve and cite.
- Important pages: Links to your About page, FAQ, shipping and returns policy, and any buying guides you've published.
How to add it to Shopify
Shopify doesn't provide a native llms.txt editor, but you can add it through your theme's file editor. Go to Online Store, then Themes, then Edit code. In the root of your theme, look for or create a file called llms.txt. Add your content in plain Markdown format. The file should be accessible at yourdomain.com/llms.txt once published.
The store that saw 340% growth
They were a premium cookware brand with solid product pages but no llms.txt. When they added one, AI crawlers could suddenly access a clean summary of their full catalog, 34 products across 5 categories, rather than trying to parse their Shopify theme. ChatGPT and Perplexity started citing them for a much wider range of cookware queries. AI referral revenue went from $2,100/month to $9,200/month in 60 days. Add your llms.txt file this week.
