Agentic Commerce
A commerce paradigm where AI agents — not humans — perform product discovery, comparison, selection, and purchase on a buyer's behalf.
What it means
Agentic commerce describes the emerging model where AI systems act as autonomous purchasing agents. A buyer specifies constraints ("buy me running shoes under $150 that fit my past preferences, with 2-day delivery") and an AI agent executes the entire shopping journey: querying product databases, comparing options, applying discount codes, and completing checkout — without the human clicking through individual pages. For merchants, this means the "customer" interacting with your store may be an AI, not a human. Shopify merchants need AI-accessible storefronts — APIs, structured product data, machine-readable checkout flows — to be discoverable and purchasable by agentic shoppers.
Why it matters for Shopify
Shopify stores accessible via the Storefront API and with clean product data are already structurally ready for agentic commerce — the buyers are just arriving differently.
