AI-to-Merchant Transaction
A completed purchase initiated and executed by an AI agent rather than a human buyer clicking through a storefront.
What it means
An AI-to-merchant transaction is the end state of agentic shopping: the AI agent surfaces a product, applies logic to select it, calls the merchant's API or navigates checkout, and completes a purchase. Attribution of these transactions differs from standard UTM-based attribution because there is no browser session in the traditional sense. New attribution frameworks are being developed by Shopify ecosystem players to track AI agent orders distinctly from human orders.
Why it matters for Shopify
Shopify merchants will need updated attribution and analytics to distinguish human-placed orders from AI-agent-placed orders as agentic commerce scales.
