What it means
Autonomous checkout is the technical capability that converts agentic shopping into completed transactions. It requires the AI agent to have access to payment credentials (stored securely), the ability to navigate or API-call checkout flows, and merchant-side checkout flows that are machine-parseable. Shopify's Checkout Extensibility and Storefront API make autonomous checkout feasible. Payment providers like Stripe are developing AI agent payment rails specifically for this use case.
