Canonical URL
The rel="canonical" tag that tells search engines and AI crawlers which version of a page is authoritative when duplicate or near-duplicate URLs exist.
What it means
Ecommerce sites generate duplicate content constantly, the same product reachable through multiple collection paths, filtered and sorted URL variants, tracking parameters appended to links. A canonical tag points all of those variants back to one authoritative URL, consolidating ranking and citation signals instead of splitting them across near-identical pages. Missing or incorrect canonicals is one of the most common technical issues on Shopify stores with heavy faceted navigation.
Why it matters for Shopify
Shopify merchants with correct canonical tags across filtered and variant URLs consolidate their AI citation signal onto one authoritative product page, instead of splitting it thin across duplicate versions.
