Conversational Commerce
Commerce that happens through natural conversation with an AI — from product discovery through checkout — rather than through traditional website browsing.
What it means
Conversational commerce was originally coined for chatbot-based shopping (Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp bots). It now describes the broader shift toward buying through AI conversations: a buyer asks ChatGPT "get me a birthday gift for my sister who likes hiking under $80" and the AI surfaces products, takes preferences, and facilitates purchase. The interface is conversation; the outcome is a transaction. Shopify is the backend; the AI chat is the storefront.
Why it matters for Shopify
Shopify merchants participating in conversational commerce channels need products that AI systems can describe, compare, and recommend fluently in conversational responses.
