Headless Commerce
A commerce architecture where the storefront presentation layer is decoupled from the backend, enabling AI agents and non-browser interfaces to transact directly.
What it means
Headless commerce separates the visual storefront a human sees from the commerce backend (inventory, checkout, orders). This separation means a storefront can be accessed not just via browser but via API — which is exactly how AI agents interact with stores. Shopify's Storefront API and Hydrogen framework are its headless offerings. Headless storefronts are inherently more agentic-commerce-ready than traditional theme-based stores.
Why it matters for Shopify
Shopify merchants who go headless gain flexibility to integrate with AI agent frameworks and non-browser purchase channels as agentic commerce matures.
