Shopify Hydrogen
Shopify's React-based framework for building custom, headless storefronts on top of the Storefront API.
What it means
Hydrogen gives merchants full control over storefront presentation while still running on Shopify's commerce backend, inventory, checkout, orders, all accessed through the Storefront API. Because Hydrogen storefronts are built on structured API queries rather than a fixed theme, they can be more easily adapted to expose clean, structured data to AI crawlers and agents, at the cost of more development effort than a standard theme.
Why it matters for Shopify
Shopify merchants building on Hydrogen have more control to structure their storefront specifically for AI readability, but take on the responsibility of implementing schema and crawlability correctly themselves, rather than inheriting it from a theme.
