UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol)
A cross-platform protocol, co-developed by Shopify and Google, that lets AI agents discover, evaluate, and transact across any supported store using one standard.
What it means
UCP exists to solve fragmentation: without it, a store would need separate integrations for every AI platform and agent framework that wants to shop there. UCP gives merchants one integration that works across multiple agent ecosystems, rather than betting on a single vendor's protocol becoming the winner. It complements MCP (discovery) and ACP (transaction) as the cross-platform compatibility layer.
Why it matters for Shopify
Shopify merchants supporting UCP avoid having to pick which AI agent ecosystem to build for, since orders can arrive from any agent framework that speaks the protocol.
