What is LLMs.txt?
LLMs.txt is a plain-text file placed at the root of a website — yourstore.com/llms.txt — that tells AI language models what the site contains, what the brand sells, who it's for, and which pages matter most.
It's the AI equivalent of robots.txt. Instead of telling search crawlers what to index, it tells AI platforms — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot — what to understand and cite. The standard was proposed by Answer.ai's Jeremy Howard in 2024 and has since been adopted as a foundational GEO signal.
For Shopify stores specifically, LLMs.txt solves a real problem. Shopify store structure — product pages, collections, blog posts — is not naturally AI-readable without explicit mapping. Without LLMs.txt, AI platforms have to infer what your store sells from crawled HTML, which leads to incomplete or inaccurate recommendations. With LLMs.txt, you control exactly what AI platforms understand about your brand.
Fewer than 5% of Shopify stores have LLMs.txt. That means the stores that add it now have a structural advantage in AI citations while competitors are still invisible to AI platforms.
Why Shopify stores specifically need LLMs.txt
AI platforms guess without it
Without LLMs.txt, ChatGPT and Perplexity crawl your HTML and guess what you sell. Shopify's theme structure — collection pages, product variants, metafields — is difficult for AI to interpret accurately. The result: partial recommendations, wrong product categories, missed differentiators.
You control the narrative
With LLMs.txt, you tell AI exactly which products to recommend, what your brand stands for, who your customer is, and what makes you the right choice. A 100-year-old pearl jewelry brand can make sure AI knows it's authentic and family-owned — not just another jeweler.
Compound advantage over time
AI platforms cache and re-crawl LLMs.txt files. A correctly structured file means every future crawl reinforces your store's position in the AI's understanding of your category. Stores without LLMs.txt fall further behind as competitors add it.
What a Shopify LLMs.txt file should contain
Here's an annotated example for a pearl jewelry store. Each section tells AI platforms something specific they need to make accurate recommendations.

# Store NameThe H1 equivalent for AI. Tells the model the brand name immediately. Don't use 'Welcome to' or marketing language — just the name.
> Brand descriptionOne factual sentence that an AI could quote directly. Include: product type, origin story or differentiator, shipping/service scope. Avoid superlatives.
## ProductsMaps your catalog with URLs. AI platforms use this to send traffic to specific collection pages, not just your homepage. Include: product name, URL, brief description with key specs, price range.
## AboutBrand authority signals: founding date, credentials, press mentions, certifications. This is what AI platforms cite when someone asks 'is this brand trustworthy?'
## Best ForThe customer-matching section. AI platforms match your store to buyer queries based on this. Be specific about who buys from you — not demographics, but purchase intent and occasion.
## Key PagesDirects AI traffic to your highest-converting pages beyond collections. FAQ pages, care guides, and review pages all increase purchase confidence — and AI platforms can recommend them for pre-purchase questions.
How to set up LLMs.txt on Shopify
Manual method
Write your llms.txt file in any text editor following the format above. Save as plain text, filename exactly: llms.txt.
In Shopify Admin → Online Store → Files, upload your llms.txt file. It will be hosted at yourstore.myshopify.com/llms.txt — but you need to set up a custom domain redirect to your root domain.
Visit yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a browser. If you see your file contents, it's working. If not, check that the file isn't blocked in robots.txt.
Whenever you add products, change pricing, or earn new certifications, update your LLMs.txt manually. Static files go stale — AI platforms may cache outdated information for weeks.
Comergent AI method
One-click install from the Shopify App Store. Connect your store — no developer required.
Comergent AI reads your live product catalog, collections, reviews, and brand metadata via the Shopify API. Your LLMs.txt is generated and hosted at your domain root within hours of installation.
As your catalog changes, Comergent AI refreshes your LLMs.txt automatically. Pro plan: every 7 days. Enterprise: every 24 hours. No manual updates required.
Track which AI queries your store is ranking for, and see when AI platforms last crawled your LLMs.txt. Know exactly which products are being cited and which prompts to target next.
How often to refresh your LLMs.txt
A static LLMs.txt file goes stale. AI platforms crawl and cache it — meaning an outdated file can persist in AI recommendations for weeks after your catalog changes. If you launch a new product line, earn a new certification, or update pricing, a stale LLMs.txt means AI platforms are still recommending your old catalog.
The right refresh cadence depends on how frequently your catalog changes. Fast-changing catalogs (seasonal fashion, limited releases) need weekly or daily updates. Stable catalogs (heritage brands, evergreen products) can sustain monthly updates.

What happens after a correctly structured LLMs.txt
"A 100-year-old brand that was invisible to AI platforms. Within weeks of LLMs.txt installation, ranking on 67+ prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot. LLM traffic growing 15–20% per month and compounding."
"Ouros Jewels competes in one of the most saturated jewelry niches on Google. On AI platforms — with correct LLMs.txt and GEO signals — they rank on 20+ prompts across all five platforms and attribute $8,000 in monthly revenue to AI."
Across Comergent AI's brand base: stores that implement a correctly structured LLMs.txt see an average 340% increase in AI referral traffic within 60 days compared to pre-installation baseline. The LLMs.txt file is the single highest-leverage action in the GEO checklist — because it changes what AI platforms fundamentally understand about your store.
