UTM Parameters (AI Context)
URL tracking codes that tell Shopify analytics which AI platform sent each visitor.
What it means
UTM parameters (source, medium, campaign, content, term) are appended to URLs when an AI platform links to a Shopify store. When a buyer clicks a ChatGPT citation, the URL might include ?utm_source=chatgpt&utm_medium=ai_referral. Shopify Analytics and Google Analytics capture these parameters and assign sessions and conversions to the AI source. Without UTM parameters, AI referral traffic is lumped into "direct" or "referral" and is invisible.
